This May Be My Last Post

This may be my last post.

GAAAASP!

(That was me gasping, not you.)

Because I just went for my first run.

Ever.

And I may die!

{Ummm, I am neither of these women.  Obviously.}

{Pic found on this lovely collection of running articles at Self.com}

To all the runners out there:

How did you get started?

What keeps you motivated?

Please tell me you could barely run at all in the beginning and that it gets better...

Any tips on how to run well?

I've already learned one thing: my little black Nike shorts ride up in about .003 seconds.

My goal is to run to stay in shape, and to eventually like it.

I have never liked running.

After reading about awesome bloggers who are running half and full marathons, and finally finding a sports bra that really holds the bazongas down, I was feeling motivated to at least try running.

But those sad 10 minutes, with both my chub and my Nike shorts working against me, have discouraged me.

So help me, runners!  I need some reassurance!

  1. Hi!! I've been running for the last 2 months and am really starting to like it. At first it was hard (like, really really hard) but I have gotten better and its getting easier. What I've been doing is this:

    The Couch to 5k Running plan
    http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

    It starts you off slow and you add on more distance every week. This past Monday I ran for twenty minutes without stopping! My goal is too do a 5k in around 30 minutes by July. I hope this helped!! :)

  2. Wow! I don't know what to tell you. I'm in the same boat as you, if someone asked me run to the mailbox, I'd think it was a chore. My best friend however, runs marathons all the time! She loves it! I think with practice you will too. Good luck!

  3. I can't run outdoors- but running inside is completely different. With an ipod on and my water bottle just arms length away (not to mention the glorious gym AC), I have become friends with the treadmill. I also love how you can set your mile pace. Running indoors-- so much better. :)

  4. I hate when my shorts ride up! Great job though. The hardest part is getting started.

  5. Ahhhhh, I'm with you sista! I've always had a relationship with running, a HATE relationship that is. Back in February I started the c25k program and was at week #4 before I went on a cruise and lost any and all motivation I had for running and of course tomorrow I'm supposed to "run" a 5K (Race for the Cure) - I'm pretty sure I might die just thinking about it and I'm pretty sure I'll mostly be WALKING, lol!

  6. Wish I could give you any reassurance, love. I personally see little point in running if there's no one chasing you, but I HAVE found that I can pound it out better on a treadmill or elliptical than around my neighborhood...

  7. I'm so happy you're getting motivated to run! I absolutely love running. I first started running in February 2009.

    I keep my motivation with a couple of things. I found a long time runner for a mentor, it's nice to have the advice and encouragement. I signed up for a race, it's always nice to have a goal to reach. And I love occassionally rewarding myself with cute new running clothes. I like Danskin from Walmart & Champion from Target when I just need a little extra motivation, but I'm an addict for the Nike store when I've met a big goal!

    I'm not a fan of running indoors on a treadmill. Unless you have something to track your distance (like a Garmin or Nike+ sensor & if you're driven to keep track of your pace and distance) it's not accurately recording your pace or distance. It measures the belt rotations rather than your stride and speed. I find my Nike+ sensor incredibly motivating. I love keeping track of my progress. And it's just so much more beautiful outdoors.

    My mom just ran her first 5k a few weeks ago. She used the program from www.c25k.com. It even has an iPhone app that she loved. After 9 weeks of training she finished her very first race in 30:49. It can be done!

    I'll support and encourage you. Running is rewarding in so many different ways. Sorry about the novel here, but I know you can do it! Keep us updated on your progress :)
