I can't play Top 2 this week because the topic is about The Bachelorette, and that, sadly, is one reality show I do not watch. :(
Instead, I thought I'd give you a book review:
Jen Lancaster's "My Fair Lazy"
I'm only about 3/4 of the way through this book, but I've read every other memoir she's written: Bitter is the New Black; Pretty in Plaid; Bright Lights, Big Ass; and Such a Pretty Fat.
If you've ever seen a blonde with big curly hair, attempting in vain to stifle a laugh and creating an unattractive snorting noise on say, an airplane, or the waiting room of the gynecologist's office, while reading a Jen Lancaster book, it was probably me. I laugh out loud at these books ALL THE TIME, much to Mr. D's chagrin.
Before "My Fair Lazy," I thought "Pretty in Plaid" was my least favorite, but unfortunately, "My Fair Lazy" is in the lead as My Least Favorite Jen Lancaster Book.
Not that it's bad. Jen makes all her topics extremely relatable. A successful executive turned nearly-homeless-person turned author attempts to enlighten herself after realizing she sucks at being cultured. Haven't we all had one of those moments where we feel inferior because we have no idea what the intellectual people around us are talking about? Jen decides to do something about it.
But, the downside is, Jen gives us play-by-plays of... plays, and operas, and while she still manages to get some snarky one liners or strikingly accurate obscure pop culture references in there, it's a lot of work for not enough pay-off.
If you've never read Jen Lancaster's books, pick up "Bitter is the New Black" or "Such a Pretty Fat" first. And if you're already a Lancaster fan, don't expect to keeled over at this one, but it's good for a few chuckles. If you've read it, what did you think?
I loved "Bitter is the New Black" and "Such a Pretty Fat", but I didn't like "Pretty in Plaid" either. She's so honest and hilarious, so I was disappointed too. I guess I won't add the newest one to my summer reading list! Thanks for the review!
